Cleaning up.
Following the launch of the Government's ACT ON CO2 campaign to help tackle climate change, BMW's most fuel efficient production car of modern times has set a new benchmark courtesy of advanced engineering. The BMW 118d, ranking higher than competitor models such as the Volkswagen Golf and the Audi A3 in the Department of Transport's 'Best on CO2' car rankings for a small family car, now costs just £35 a year to tax.
This advanced engineering, known as EfficientDynamics, is the next step in philosophy that BMW has been developing for several years, aimed at increasing engine power while reducing both fuel consumption and emissions.
To achieve these goals, BMW has been pioneering the use of more lightweight materials to achieve significant weight reductions. Lower weight creates improved power to weight ratios, leading to lower fuel consumption. At the same time, BMW has also been developing advanced engine technologies like Twin Turbo and High-precision direct injection, which use fuel more intelligently to deliver increased driving pleasure and performance, as well as lower emissions.
As well as benefiting from increased engine power and performance, drivers will notice the advantages of EfficientDynamics in lower BIK tax liabilities and reduced fuel costs.
Intelligent Energy Management Systems
The five main new technologies central to the EfficientDynamics programme are:
Auto Start-Stop.
The engine automatically stops whenever the car comes to rest and the gear is disengaged – for example, at traffic lights – and restarts the second the clutch is depressed, saving fuel and reducing emissions.
Intelligent Alternator Control.
Disengages the alternator when the battery is fully charged, and only engages again when the battery needs charging. This decreases engine drag, reducing fuel consumption and emissions at the same time.
Brake Energy Regeneration.
When the car's brakes are applied or when coasting downhill, this system automatically engages the alternator to charge the battery to full power, recycling energy that would otherwise be wasted.
Electronic Power Steering.
Makes the car easier to handle at slow speeds. Removing the existing hydraulic system saves weight and removes the need for a pump to be driven from the engine, reducing fuel consumption.
Optimum Gear Shift Indicator.
A small indicator on the car's dashboard display shows the optimum gear for any driving situation, giving drivers the ability to adopt a more fuel-efficient driving style.
EfficientDynamics further strengthens the case for choosing a BMW. The further development of active hybridisation and the emergence of hydrogen technology give plenty to look forward to in the coming years.
Stewart Catterall, New Car Sales Manager said: "these are exciting times at Scotthall Hampshire. With the integration of BMW EfficientDynamics technology we are able to help our customers cut their fuels bills as well as reduce emissions across the entire BMW range."
